CHAPTER FOUR

Cecilia knew she was a little more than tipsy when Wyatt took the keys from her and unlocked her apartment door. After spending the morning wandering the market and buying Christmas gifts for family, they’d made their way to Hyde Park and walked along the Serpentine, its edges just beginning to freeze, the smell of roasting chestnuts scenting the air. On the other side of Green Park, they’d found a small café to slip into for a late lunch. Several hours and a few bottles of wine later, they braved the cold again and walked through St. James Park, up along the Thames, and then finally crossed back over the river at the Waterloo Bridge and returned to their apartments. But no sooner had they set their purchases down when Cecilia had remembered a holiday party she’d been invited to that evening. Tempted to forgo it, Wyatt had convinced her otherwise, reminding her that this holiday season was all about her. When he’d agreed to join her, she’d easily acquiesced.

Her friends had been surprised when Wyatt had walked in with her, but it hadn’t taken long for him to charm them. It also hadn’t taken long for the teasing volleys to start flying, about half of which included references to their age difference. Wyatt had taken everything in stride, deflecting the teasing, probing comments in a way that made people laugh but also made it clear further comments weren’t welcome. And she, well, she’d had a much less mature way of handling it and had probably had one—or three—too many spiked ciders.

Now, after four hours of eating and drinking far more than was respectable, like two teenagers, they were stumbling home in the dark of the night.

“Sit,” Wyatt directed her with a smile, pointing to one of the stools at the kitchen counter. “I’ll get us some water. Or maybe you’d like some coffee or tea?”

“Tea,” she said. “And some toast. We’ll have tea and toast with honey.” There was nothing quite like toast with honey after a night out. She didn’t need the additional sugar—the cider had had quite enough—but now that she was alone with Wyatt, she sure wouldn’t mind a little dose of comfort food to calm her fluttering stomach.

He slid a glass of water in front of her before turning back to the stove and putting the kettle on. She watched him move around her kitchen as he looked for cups, tea, and bread. She thought about pointing them out to him, but in her muddled state, she was rather enjoying watching his efficient, graceful body move before her in his well-worn jeans and perfectly fitted black cashmere sweater. She knew he wore a thin, silk undershirt underneath the sweater for warmth—one that couldn’t be seen—but it did nothing to ruin the lines of his well-tailored clothes.

“How do your clothes fit so well?” she asked, attributing the odd question to those spiked ciders.

His brow furrowed and he looked down at his sweater and jeans. “Do they?” he asked.
